This pattern is named for French industrialist André-Gustave Citroën (1878–1935). He is remembered chiefly for the make of car named after him, but also for his application of double helical gears, which inspired the logo for his brand, as well as the stitch pattern in this scarf. Also known as ‘herringbone gears’, the inlaid chevron pattern on these gears increases efficiency and decreases noise. Since a ‘muffler’ can be either a quieting mechanism in motors, or the British word for a scarf, in this pattern the pun serves double duty. Hopefully this fully reversible, unisex muffler keeps you cozy, if not quiet!

The pattern includes instructions for a longer, two-skein circle scarf (“Grand”), which can be worn long or doubled up for extra warmth, as well as for a shorter cowl which requires only one skein (“Petit”).
