From Knitting Lingerie Style:

I love the fashions of the 1940s.  The designs even during wartime, were clever, flattering, innovative, and even sexy.  A particularly appealing category of dressing at the time was one known as "playwear."  This included very casual outfits such as shorts sets, sun suits, and beach outfits.  These were not swimwear per se, but they certainly showed plenty of skin, as they were primarily designed to give exposure to the sun.

My Citrus Sun Top would fit neatly into the playwear category.  Since no bra would work underneath it, the shaped cups and crisscrossed straps of the top itself are designed to lightly lift the bust.  Unlike those of the Basic Bra, the cups in this top are shaped with knitted-in vertical bust darts for a close fit and an eye-catching play on color, while the vertical stripes whittle a slender middle.
