The Claddagh Ring is a traditional Irish ring given which represents love, loyalty, and friendship. The hands of the ring represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh which is just outside the old city walls of Galway. Although the customs associated with the ring go way back, the ring, as it is currently known, was first produced in the 17th century. My daughter’s boyfriend gave her a Claddagh ring recently as a promise ring, so, in honor of this event, and because of my own Irish heritage, I designed this shawlette. It is a sideways garter stitch scarf that has an Irish Lace Ring Edging that is worked at the same time as you knit the body of the scarf. You decide whether it will be a longer shawlette or a shorter scarf by the amount of yarn you want to invest in your project. I knit the scarf you see pictured in only one skein (310 yards) of Malabrigo’s Rastita, slightly felted merino wool yarn in the Solis colorway (DK weight), so it is basically a scarf and not a shawlette. It is just under 6 feet, and about a foot in width. I give instructions in this pattern for how to vary the yarn weight and amount of yarn used to customize the pattern into the size shawlette or scarf you would like to end up with.
