These patterns were inspired by Eva Christie, founder of Perth Festival of Yarn in 2016, which subsequently became The Scottish Yarn Festival. The yarn brand “Clan” was launched by Eva herself at The Scottish Yarn Festival in September 2023, and I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase some of the first skeins!

Overview of design
This is a fair isle tammy hat, knitted in the round from the bottom up, starting with a corrugated rib welt. Stitches are increased at regular intervals to the brim and then decreased at regular intervals to form the traditional round “wheel” crown.

Stranded colorwork

Materials
The Scottish Yarn Festival Clan 4ply - 80% Shetland, 20% Cheviot. Approximately 350 m / 383 yds per 100g / 3.5 oz ball.

1 x 100g Skein in each of the following colours:
Gordon
Wallace
Duncan
Dewar
Bruce
Anderson

Needles
Gauge-size needles of your choice. For this pattern I used a 100 cm / 40”, 2.75 mm / US 2 circular needle for the corrugated rib and a 100 cm / 40” 3.25 mm / US 3 circular needle for the rest of the hat. Use whichever type of needle(s) you prefer, so long as you can obtain the correct gauge. Please note you may struggle with DPNs when the hat reaches its widest point where there will be 180 stitches.

Notions
Stitch markers (at least one)
Tapestry needle for sewing in ends

Gauge
32 Sts and 32 rows worked in the round using larger gauge size needles = 10cm/4” square

Size
One size only – to fit a medium size head.
Circumference of brim - 50 cm / 19.7”
Depth from cast on to end - 25 cm / 9.8”
