Meet the Clare shawl! As soon as the Jon Shawl was released, we said there had to be a Clare Shawl – named after the other half of Birdstreet Yarn. Using the Jon Shawl concept, adding in some eyelets and toning down the stripes and the Clare Shawl was born. The sample is knit using Birdstreet sock yarn striped with a Suri alpaca. She’s light and airy and a dream to wear.
The design is knit tip to tip avoiding rows with lots of stitches. The main colour and the contrast Suri alpaca are striped to create a concertina effect with easy eyelets, garter and reverse garter stripes. I have a feeling you’ll want to knit more than one!
Yarn: 400m fingering weight in colour A and 400m Suri alpaca in colour B.
The pattern could be knit with mohair held double (800m) or with another fingering weight yarn (400m) as the contrast colour.
Sample1 was knit using Colour A: Birdstreet Yarn sock in the colour way Mallow and Colour B: Suri alpaca silk in the colour way Tamarisk Cloud.
Suggested Needles: US 4/3.5mm or needles required to get gauge.
Gauge: 28 sts x 34 rows to 10cm/4” over stitch pattern blocked; gauge is less important in a shawl, however, if your gauge is looser than specified more yarn will be required.
Measurements: 221 cm/88” wingspan, 35cm/14” depth.
