Clementine is a cowl with a difference. The knitting starts with a garter tab and a triangular section knitted flat, then transitions into a section knitted in the round. The end result is a piece that goes around your neck and down over your chest. I call it cowgirl-style - it is perfect for wearing under coats and even pulling up over your nose (for maximum cowgirl attitude).

The cowl will look best in tonal or solid colourways. Because the lace is detailed, variegated yarns with strong contrast between colours probably won’t look so good. Choose a yarn with good stitch definition for best results.

Clementine uses about 205 m (225 yds) of yarn with a yardage of about 250 m (275 yds)/100 grams. This is typically DK weight, but I’ve seen it called other weights too. Checking your gauge before knitting this pattern is strongly recommended.

The lace in Clementine uses single and double yarnovers, single and double decreases and left and right 1/1 cables. Wrong side rows are purled, with p1, k1 in the double yarnovers from the previous row.

Clementine uses a secret code pattern from Naomi Parkhurst (gannet here on Ravelry). This one uses ‘Resist’ and so the pattern is named for Clementine Ford, an Australian feminist activist.
