I can’t take the credit for the clever stitch - I found it in
a Barbara Walker treasury - but I did try to create an interesting crown to match the cleverness of the stitch.

Although this looks intricately cabled you’ll only use the cable needle 16x for the whole thing - thanks to BW’s idea.

PATTERN IS CHARTED ONLY - BUT IT’S A VERY LOGICAL CHART.

Note - the hat was designed to be worn with the ribbing turned up to form a cuff, and for that reason the rib and cables do not align.
If you don’t plan to turn up the cuff, you may wish to modify the ribbing to get it to line up.
