Cloisonné - a clever technique using thin strips of wire to control the colours of enamel (as I overheard my father explaining to my daughter when he gave her the items you see in the photo).

Here the technique is interpreted in yarn; using a solid colour to both control and highlight bright shades in variegated yarn.

The yarns can also be reversed to create a bright smocking effect over a solid background (see photo #4).

Yarn usage: this is a modular pattern so you can adjust to the size you like or the yarn you have available:

I used under 200m/220yds of each yarn and the finished scarves are about 150 x 40 cm (60 x 16”) .

The shape is a long skinny triangle; not a deeper traditional one.

If the shawl/scarf is finished with i-cord, single crochet or similar it will be reversible - the other side is quite different, but also very wearable (see photo #7).

NOTE: The pattern contains detailed instructions (photos/written instructions and charts) for the colourwork section, but only provides tips and links for the i-cord or crocheted finish (if you don’t already know how to work these, you may need to do some extra reading or trying out a few things before working the edging.)
