“Ne’er cast a cloot til mey’s oot” Traditional Saying
You may have heard of the word “clootie” in reference to the Scottish steamed pudding, a clootie dumpling? However, you might be less familiar with the word when it’s used to mean a piece of cloth, a patch, or an item of clothing?
Used in the latter way, it’s the perfect name for a knitted headband decorated with duplicate stitch (or Swiss darning); a technique commonly used for patching or mending fabric, and as a knitter, a very handy skill to have in your knitterly armoury!
Knitted in 4ply / fingering weight yarn held together with a strand of mohair silk lace, the Clootie Headband is a useful and stylish accessory for the colder months (great for “messy bun” days): with the mohair yarn, in particular, helping to create a super-cosy fabric, that keeps your ears warm and your hair smooth.

CONSTRUCTION NOTES
The Clootie Headband is worked in the round, in one piece beginning and ending with an i-cord. The tapered ends are shaped by increasing for the first side and decreasing for the second.
The duplicate stitch patterning is worked whilst the headband is in progress (if you find this awkward, you can temporarily transfer the stitches onto waste yarn to work the duplicate stitch). The advantage of working this way is that the CC1 & CC2 stitches and ends are hidden on the inside of the work!
The headband has been designed so duplicate stitch pattern is off centre, but it could be placed elsewhere or extended if desired, in which case you’d need more of CC1 & CC2 than stated below.
