Clootie Well in the North East of Scotland is an ancient wishing well with hundreds of offerings of cloth - or cloot - hanging from the trees that surround the water source. Wishing wells exist all over the world and every day people are throwing coins into wells to make a wish come true.

Many of these wells have joyful, upward shooting jets, as in the Fountain Lace Patter, which has been adapted to better fit the pattern repeat.

The shawl is a triangular lace shawl, worked from the bottom up, starting with 3 stitches and finishing with a garter stitch border. Tassels at every corner are not only an additional fun element, but help to keep the shawl in shape.

The shawl can be worked in fingering or DK weight yarns and is adaptable in size.Gradient yarns work especially well.

The red sample shawl is made with smaller needles and approx. 574 yds (525m) fingering weight yarn.
Measurements: 64” (162.5 cm) x 26.5” (68 cm) after blocking.

The gradient yarn shawl is made with larger needles and approx. 480 yds (440 m) DK weight yarn.
Measurements: 61” (155 cm) x 26.5” (68 cm) after blocking.
