Here’s a simple mitten pattern that creates cloud-soft, luxurious mittens that make the best gifts.

The basic mitten is knit at a DK-weigh gauge but uses two yarns held together instead to create a fuzzy, soft halo that you’ll want to pet all the time.

I recommend using Pretty String’s Pretty Cloud, which is a super-soft combo of baby suri alpaca and silk. It’s similar in weight and structure to any laceweight silk-mohair blend, but the baby alpaca gives complete softness with no hint of prickle. I’m in love!

By blending a laceweight fluff with any sock yarn, you can create all sorts of interesting colour hybrids, and some of the results are quite surprising.

The basic mitten structure is plain, with a ribbed cuff, an offset thumb gusset, and side decreases at the fingertips. The offset thumb gusset keeps the fingertips from twisting on the hand when worn. The mittens are knit in the round from the cuffs up, using your favourite method for knitting small things in the round, whatever that may be.

I’ve provided a little selection of ribbed cuff options. After knitting a few pairs, I like to switch things up a bit now and then.

Sizes:
There are four sizes, suitable for hands of older kids up to large adults.

Yarns:
You can knit these using one strand of DK weight yarn, or two strands of regular fingering weight yarn, or the recommended fluff plus sock yarn.

If using one strand of DK yarn, you’ll need about 50g for one pair.

Additional Materials:
A length of waste yarn to hold stitches
A blunt yarn darner
A sharp yarn darner
A measuring tape
