Blurring the boundary between garment and accessory, Clúdaigh is an open vest that can also perform the function of a shawl or scarf. Constructed flat in one piece, this design makes use of simple knit and crochet techniques to create a tartan fabric. Choose a low-contrast colour palette for a subtle look, or a high-contrast combination for a striking statement piece.

Clúdaigh is pronounced clue-dee and means ‘drape’ in Irish Gaelic.

Construction

worked flat, in one piece, starting with the back, from the bottom up. After reaching the shoulders, the front panels are then worked separately, top-down. The back of the neck is finished with i-cord. Tassels are assembled and attached along the bottom edges. Optional side-tabs are knitted separately. 



How To Wear Clúdaigh

To wear as a vest: Attach the side-tabs to the fronts and back as shown in photos. The fronts can be left open, or criss-crossed and tucked (partially or fully) inside a waistband. A belt can also be worn to hold the piece together, in which case the tabs are not needed.



To wear as a scarf/shawl under an ovecroat: Unbutton the front of each tab (the tabs can be left attached to the back) and wrap the fronts around your neck. Alternatively, you can wear Clúdaigh backwards, so that the back piece covers the front of your torso to keep it extra warm, and the fronts wrap around your neck.

Yarn Substitution
This pattern will work with a variety of standard DK to Aran weight yarns.

If you specifically want to use an unspun yarn: Nutiden works well as a substitution for &Point, although it is slightly thinner. Plotulopi, on the other hand, is significantly thicker than &Point and you may need to adjust gauge and go down a size if using it. I have no experience with other unspun yarns, but if the meterage is equivalent (approximately 400m/100g single-stranded) it should work as a substitute.

If you would like to use a ‘normal’ and easily accessible yarn that has a similar weight and drape to the unspun yarns used for the main pattern samples, consider Drops Air (if you prefer soft & fluffy) or Lettlopi (if you prefer rustic and durable). Both can be knitted at the specified gauge with pleasing results.
