When I chose the dark yarn to knit this beanie for my brother, I knew I would need to use a chunky stitch pattern for it to be seen properly. The cluster stitches create a cable look texture and the wraps pull the stockinette columns of the rib to wave back and forth up the hat.

The hat has a double brim for extra warmth around the ears and the provisional cast of leaves a stretchy brim unconstrained by a cast on edge.

The 8 round stitch pattern is made up of 2x2 rib with the “cluster” made of two wraps around groups of stitches. The decreases reduce the number of stitches within each cluster, finishing in a 1x1 rib.
