Coastal Dreams
When I was 8, my family and I visited the Oregon coast for a week over summer. I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, with its cool evenings, buckets of clam chowder, waves on the sand and the small swirls and eddies left behind when the waves receded. I designed this shawl to remember those small moments and the peace the ocean brings, even if I live in a land-locked state.
This asymmetrical, triangular shawl is worked flat, using two colors of a fingering weight yarn. Only one color is used at a time, and the unused color can be carried up along the side. Directions for this are given when there are more than two rows of the same color. The combination of bamboo and recycled plastic bottles gives a yarn that both helps protect the environment and is light and cool to the touch, perfect for a summer evening’s walk.
I have created a tutorial for the swirl stitches that can be found here.
Yarn:
Popcycle from HiKoo by Skacel (50% bamboo, 50% polyester from recycled plastic bottles; 305 yds/279 m per 3.5 oz/100 g skein); 1 skein each of 2 colors. Shown in Peaceful (#3008) and COTY (#2020)
I used all of each skein, so please note that any modifications will require a second skein of each color.
