I started a shawl because I was craving simplicity during lockdown. As I knit, it became inextricably entwined with my hopes for my daughter. She was applying to German universities for her master’s degree. Proud mama, I wanted her to fly the nest and spread her wings while also wanting to wrap her in a hug. We were both dreaming of her living a new life where she walked on cobblestones and practiced her German, so this shawl came by its name very easily.
This shawl alternates stripes of garter and stockinette to create a fabric you’re drawn to run a hand across. A sizzle of my (current) favourite mosaic pattern helps anchor the bottom edge with a grid of checkerboard squares. Mosaic knitting’s ability to bring dazzling results while still only working with one colour at a time is practically magic, and makes this a great shawl for advanced beginners.
The final garter edging makes it easy to adapt the shawl size and use up your yarn. Speaking of yarn, this is a great shawl to play with colour! Just make sure that in the mosaic area you have a strong contrast between the two colours you’re using to make the checkerboard pop.
