Cockleshell Socks – Beautiful Summer socks
Cockleshell Socks feature a beautiful stitch pattern
that continues all the way down to the heel and
toes. The socks are worked from the cuff
down in the round starting with 4 by 1 rib. They have a short row heel.
There are two adult sizes for the socks, the leg and
foot length being adjustable
Techniques
Old Norwegian cast-on / German Twisted cast-on
German Short Rows
Kitchener stitch to bound off last stitches of the toe
The pattern includes links to tutorials covering the techniques above.
Sizes
Two adult sizes with finished sock measurements of:
Foot circumference 19 (22)cm / 7 1/2 (8 3/4) “
Cuff - bottom of the heel length 13.5 (16.5)cm / 5 1/2 (6 1/2) “
Foot length approximately 23 (25.5)cm / 9 1/4 (10 1/4) “
Choose a size that gives around 2 cm / ¾ inches of negative ease in foot circumference (i.e. a size approximately 2 cm / ¾ inches smaller than the actual foot circumference). The leg and foot length are adjustable. The socks are shown in size 1 in the pictures.
Materials needed
Yarn
Cream sample knitted with:
1 (1) skein of Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn* | Silence | 90% Merino Wool / 10% nylon| Yardage 400 m / 438 yds per 100 g (or approximately 270 (360) m / 300 (400) yds of similar yarn).
Multi-color sample knitted with:
Nurja Merino Sock | Ubuntu | 75% Superwash Merino Wool / 25% Polyamide | Yardage 420 m / 459 yds per 100 g. (I did not get the same gauge with this yarn, so added one more pattern repeat to the foot)
Please note that if you want to alter the size of the socks, more yarn may be required.
Needles
• 2.5 mm / US 1.5 double-pointed needles or circular needle for small circumference knitting (in case you prefer the magic loop method).
• 3.5 mm / E4 crochet hook if you prefer to use crochet hook to pull the loops
Notions
• A tapestry needle for weaving in the yarn ends
