Before the turn of the year 2017/2018 the ”Kalakukkoneulojat” knitting club was founded. The knitting patterns published so far are really beautiful, and I hope that the shrug/shawl I designed will be as appealing as the earlier club garments.

When I enrolled as a designer, I promised to make something lacy, and my knitting friend mentioned she needed a shawl or shrug to wear over a beautiful summer dress, to cover the shoulders in church or to protect from the sun when sitting on the summer terrace. That’s where the thought started…

I pondered that it might be nice to knit something for the summer that you can take everywhere. You’d get a shrug by fastening the buttons, a shawl by unfastening them. On the other hand you can leave the buttons out altogether.

I gradually started thinking about a shawl with at least 2 different flowers. (It took a long time to find the inspiration for this knit.) You can use beads for the shawl, like in the purple one, and because the shawl is so symmetrical, I added an asymmetrical pattern to the back’s argyle shapes, to keep the interest up. At the same time the argyle shapes brought a third distinct flower pattern to the shawl. The knit got its name from the hexadecimal code for the color silver – c0c0c0.
The shrug-shawl is rectangular and the sleeves are fastened with buttons, turning the shawl into a shrug. The work is started with a temporary cast-on. The shawl is knit from the back’s midline towards the wrists, first one half of the shawl and then the other. The shrug-shawl is knit with smaller needles than usual, making it more dense than in regular lace. I planned the knit to also protect from the sun. In my opinion large holes let too much light through.

The silver-gray shawl is knit using XL-XXL stitch counts, but blocked to different measurements, as I didn’t need a shrug myself. The plum-colored shawl is size XS-S, but the model is size M. This means that the shrug is not meant to be just as skintight as the one worn by the model. It is easy to adjust the shrug’s size though, and if you want a skintight fit, then feel free to try.

Ennen vuodenvaihdetta 2017 perustettiin
Kalakukkoneulojien neuleklubi. Tähän mennessä
ilmestyneet ohjeet ovat todella kauniita ja toivon,
että suunnittelemani hihatin-huivi on teille samalla
tavoin mieleen kuin aikaisemmat klubineuleet.

Lupasin suunnittelijaksi ilmoittautuessani jonkin
sortin pitsihärpäkkeen ja neuleystäväni totesi
kaipaavansa huivia/hihatinta, jonka voi vetää
kauniin kesämekon päälle peittämään olkapäät
kirkossa tai suojaamaan auringolta kesäterassilla.
Siitä se ajatus sitten lähti…

Pohdiskelin, että olisi kiva neuloa kesäksi neule, joka
kulkee mukana missä vain. Hihattimen saisi napeilla,
hartia/kaulahuivin napit aukaisemalla. Toisaalta voi
jättää napit kokonaan pois. Aloin vähitellen
pyöritellä päässäni ideaa huivista, jossa on ainakin
2 erilaista kukkaa. (Tämän neuleen inspiraatio oli
pitkään hakusessa.) Huiviin voit käyttää helmiä,
kuten lilassa huivissa, ja koska huivi on muutoin
symmetrinen, niin lisäsin selän salmiakkiruutuihin
epäsymmetrisen kuvion, jotta mielenkiinto säilyisi.
Samalla salmiakkiruuduista tuli kolmas erilainen
kukkakuvio huiviin. Neule sai nimensä hopean heksadesimaalikoodista
– c0c0c0.

Hihatin-huivi on suorakaiteen mallinen ja hihat
kiinnitetään napein, jolloin huivista tulee myös
hihatin. Työ aloitetaan luomalla väliaikaisella
aloituksella silmukat. Huivi neulotaan selän
keskilinjasta kohti ranteita ensin huivin toinen
puolikas ja sitten toinen. Hihatin-huivi on neulottu
hieman totuttua pienemmillä puikoilla, jotta
neuletiheys on tiiviimpi, kuin tavanomaisissa
pitsineuleissa. Suunnittelin neuleen näin, jotta neule
myös suojaisi auringolta. Isot reiät mielestäni
päästävät liikaa valoa läpi.

Hopeanharmaa huivi on neulottu XL-XXL
silmukkamäärillä, mutta pingotettu eri mittoihin,
sillä itse en tarvinnut hihatinta. Luumunvärinen
huivi on kokoa XS-S, mutta malli on kokoa M. Eli
hihattimen ei ole tarkoitus olla ihan yhtä
ihonmyötäinen kuin mitä mallin päällä oleva neule
on. Tosin hihattimen kokoa on helppo muokata ja
mikäli haluat ihonmyötäisen neuleen, niin rohkeasti
kokeilemaan.
