Coffered Beanie - Slouchy or Fitted
There are two different versions of this beanie available here. One is slouchy, the other is fitted. Notes are included on how to adjust sizing, and how to adapt to use other weights of yarn.
The slouchy beanie is worked from the top, down, with a narrow slip-stitch ribbed brim. The crown has a gathered look to it, but avoids the excess bulk that can result from gathering the top of a hat that’s constructed as a rectangle.
The fitted beanie is also worked from the top, down, but the crown uses a different stitch pattern for a more fitted look. Rather than a ribbed brim, a simple trim is used to stabilize the edge and give it a finished look.
The Coffered Squares texture is rendered by working front post hdc and third-loop hdc (aka Camel Stitch). If you’re not already familiar with these stitches, please still give this pattern a try, as I have included detailed instructions and photos for all the special stitches called for.
This charity hat pattern was developed specifically for the “Hats for Sailors” group. If you download this pattern, please make at least one hat as a gift for your favorite charity or special loved one in “payment” for my design. I hope you enjoy the project!
I would be delighted to see the hat(s) you’ve made from these patterns, and please share any feedback or corrections you might have to the pattern.

It has been pointed out to me that I didn’t explain how to work the “invisible join” at the end of the twisted-sc edge trim on the Fitted Beanie. So please look here for a very short picture tutorial of how I did it. (I don’t have a blog or website, so check out those extra project notes.) That page also includes a step-by-step picture tutorial for the linked-hdc used on the crown, in case that’s being challenging.
