Cog hat
A very simple unisex hat with beanie and slouch options. Alternating bands of pattern stitch and stockinette provide subtle texture and the crown decreases create a neat spoked effect, just like a cog! Knitted with two strands of sock yarn this is designed for stashbusting; use two half skeins or try alternating skeins for great effect in the patterned sections (see the beautiful versions by my test knitters).
Yarn and yardage
Yarn held double. I love the weight and quality of hats made with sock yarn held double. They have some extra warmth but it creates a fabric with more drape and elegance than DK (although it is perfectly possible to knit this in a DK yarn, it will just have slightly less drape). I used DyeForWool fingering blue faced Leicester superwash in colourway Rotten Nori Sheets.
Yardage is for beanie version without a turned brim. Always allow some extra yarn, especially if wishing to create a slouch or turned brim version. If you change the suggested yarn or use yarns of different weights you may need to allow greater yardage.

Pattern & construction
Pattern is written only (no charts) with links to tutorials for cast on and other useful techniques. The hat is knitted in the round from the bottom up and assumes the use of a circular needle magic loop, though it is easy to substitute your preferred methods of knitting in the round.
