Our choice of Coho and Lichen for the 2024 Rose City Yarn Crawl’s theme of Flora and Fauna of the Pacific Northwest was strongly influenced by two lovely colorways of SoleMate yarn from Freia Fine Handpaints. This fingering-weight yarn is made from Shaniko Merino wool which is raised in Eastern Oregon. The Coho colorway moves from dark gray to bright salmon colors, mimicking the changing colors of these fish over their life cycle. The green-grays and bright greens of the Lichen colorway can be found in our native Wolf lichen and Old Man’s Beard.

Yarn
Freia Fine Handpaints Solemate (100% US Shaniko Merino Superwash; 1.76 oz/228 yds), Colors: 1 mini-ball Coho, 1 mini-ball Lichen. Total yardage used approximately 200 yds.

Needles
US Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles, and US Size 3 (3.25mm) knitting needles

Gauge
13 sts and 14 rows = 4” in garter stitch with larger size needles.
28 sts and 34 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch with smaller size needles.
Working to an exact gauge is not important for this pattern

ERRATA
For the Knitted Fish instructions,
Row 2: Should read, “K1, ssk, k4, M1, K1, M1, K4, k2tog, k1”
Since that has 2 decreases (ssk and k2tog) and 2 increases (M1) you will end up with 15 sts still at the end of Row 2.

Row 3: is the same
Row 4 should be a decrease, not an increase row. It should read, “K1, ssk, K to last 3 st, k2tog, k1”
