Coill
Originally published in Making Stories Issue 8: Campfire. This pattern is now available as an individual download.
From Eimear Earley, the designer: “Coill (Irish for ‘wood’ or ‘forest’, pronounced ‘kyle’ or ‘kweel’, depending on dialect) is a pair of lightweight mittens with cable motifs.
The all-over cable and travelling stitch motif is inspired by an imagined setting for a campfire: a clearing, surrounded by trees, with twisting branches overhead, and tangled roots underground, sheltering the campers, hidden wildlife, and imagined magical creatures from fairy tales.”
The mittens are worked in the round, from ribbed cuff to fingertip, with increases for the thumb gusset. Thumb stitches are set aside, to be worked after finishing the hand. The cables begin in the cuff, and are continued along the thumb and outer edge of the hand. Diagonal columns of travelling stitches are worked over the reverse stockinette stitch background, connecting the two sets of cables across the palm & back of the hand, and at the decreases at the tips of the mittens.
