This warm wrap combines intarsia with illusion / shadow knitting.
Shadow knitting is the more fitting term here, I think, because there aren’t any hidden shapes apart from the circle segments in the triangles. The technique, instead, is used to produce the shimmering colour effect of the piece. Because the knitting runs in different directions, not all of this is apparent at the same time, the look being different with each new angle.
Cold Ashby is also a great stashbuster - for one of the background colours, oddments can be used in random order.
For this moderately easy pattern, skills required are:
- knit, purl
- knit two together, slip slip knit, make one knitwise
- cross two single stitches (twist stitches; explained in the pattern)
- basic intarsia (explained in the pattern)
- short rows with wrapped stitches (explained in the pattern)
You will need
- approx. 400 m (437 yd) in Colour A (dark red in the sample)
- approx. 60 m (66 yd) each in Colour C and D (blue and green in the sample)
- approx. 400 m (437 yd) total for Colour Mix B (shades of red and orange in the sample)
The village of Cold Ashby in Northamptonshire is the location of Ordnance Survey’s first trig point in Britain.
