Cold Wind Cowl
If you would like to be the first to hear about new pattern releases, get special subscriber only discounts, and generally keep in touch with Knitwise Design, you may want to sign up for my newsletter: News and Notes from Knitwise Design.
This is a serious cowl that will stand up around your neck and face for real protection when the wind blows. The stitch pattern forms a bubble wrap texture that is easy and fun to work - no cables required. Fast to knit in super bulky yarn. This cowl also coordinates with my Earbuds pattern for a special gift set.
This design is appropriate for the beginning knitter who can cast on and bind off, knit, purl, and work on circular needles in the round. I have included a link to a Youtube video I made to show the specific increases and decreases used. The pattern is 2 pages long and has been test knit and professionally tech edited to be clear and free of errors.
Sizes:
One size fits most. Easily adjustable.
Finished Measurements:
Circumference: 22 in/ 56 cm
Height: 8 in/ 20.5 cm
Both circumference and height are easy to adjust by adding or subtracting repeats.
Gauge:
Since gauge is difficult to measure over this stitch pattern, choose a needle that gives you 13 sts and 18 1/2 rows over 4 in/ 10 cm on a stockinette stitch swatch worked flat.
What You Need:
-
Approximately 159 yds/ 145 m of super bulky weight yarn (6 wpi). Sample shown used 4.7 oz/ 142 g of Quince & Co Puffin - (100% wool; 112 yds/ 102 m per 3.5 oz/ 100g skein); requiring 2 skeins of color #125 “Carrie’s Yellow”.
-
16 in/ 40 cm circular needle in size required to obtain gauge. I used US #10/ 6 mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
-
one stitch marker
-
tapestry needle to weave in ends
Pattern Notes:
The cowl is knit in the round. Circumference can be adjusted in 2 in/ 5 cm increments by adding or subtracting multiples of 8 sts to the CO.
