Colin, You Flutter Me is a lightweight summer tee, and a wardrobe staple in the making. It can be worked in anything from 4ply to light DK weight yarn, and works beautifully with plant-based yarns, which add some lovely drape.
The top is knitted seamlessly from the top down, with a rounded v-neck and capped flutter sleeves. the i-cord bind off and edging add a neat finish. Work the i-cords and flutter sleeves in contrast yarn for a slightly jazzier look.
The Colin, You Flutter Me tee comes in 9 sizes, sized to fit from a 28 to 62in bust – with an optional bust adjustment taking the fit range up to 66in.
Key information
The Colin, You Flutter Me tee is worked seamlessly from the top down. Stitches are cast on for the upper back, and the top is worked down to the bottom of the armholes. Stitches are then picked up for the right and left fronts in turn, which join at the bottom of the v-neckline. After working to the bottom of the armholes, the top is joined and worked in the round until the i-cord bind off, making it simple to adjust to the exact length you want.
The capped flutter sleeves are picked up from the armhole, and worked back and forth in short rows with increases adding the signature flutter.
The Colin, You Flutter Me tee comes in 9 sizes, sized to fit from a 28 to 62in bust – with the bust adjustment taking the fit range up to 66in. Where numbers vary, instructions are written as size 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) 6, 7, 8, 9.
Suggested yarn:
4ply to DK weight yarn that meets gauge. To get the optimum flutter on your sleeves, pick a yarn with a decent amount of drape – plant-based yarns are particularly good for this, but be aware that they tend to grow with blocking, so be sure to wash and block your swatch to check gauge.
The blue sample is a size 4 with bust adjustment, worked in King Cole Bamboo Cotton, a plant-based yarn that is a fine DK weight. The mint green sample is an unadjusted size 5, worked in CaMaRose Organic Summer wool, a 4ply-weight cotton and wool mix.
Yarn requirements:
Size 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) 6, 7, 8, 9:
420 (470, 520, 635, 685) 740, 870, 935, 995m / 460 (515, 570, 695, 750) 810, 955, 1025, 1090 yds TOTAL
If you want to work your tee with contrast sleeves and i-cords, then you’ll need:
300 (335, 375, 475, 520) 565, 685, 735, 785m / 330 (370, 410, 520, 570) 620, 750, 805, 860 yds of main colour, AND 120 (135, 145, 160, 165) 175, 185, 200, 210m / 130 (150, 160, 175, 180) 190, 205, 220, 230 yds of your contrast.
These figures allow enough yarn to work the bust adjustment.
Finished size, recommended ease, and schematic:
The Colin, You Flutter Me tee is designed to be worn with 0-2in/0-5cm of positive ease for a classic tee fit.
The dimensions shown in the table (which you can find in the photos) are the measurements of the finished garment – with the exception of the upper bust measurement, which is an actual body measurement.
To get the best fit, take your upper bust measurement (measured at your underarms and over the top of your bust), and pick the size that is the closest match to this actual body measurement. If you have a full bust, you may find that this size is smaller than you’d usually knit; if so, then you can work the optional bust adjustment to get a better all-over fit than you’d achieve from knitting a larger size.
