This light as air, long summer scarf is very easy, which makes it great to take along to knit night, or to binge-watch your favourite TV shows while working on it. Then, you get to the fun bit of dropping the stitches and letting the magic happen!

The scarf is deliciously long, which gives you lots of different ways to style it and it is reversible, so there is no ‘wrong side’.

Supplies: 400 to 450 m (440 to 500 yards) of heavy lace or light fingering weight yarn, your needles, a crochet hook the same size as your knitting needles and a sewing up needle. You might find a dpn helpful for dropping the stitches, but it’s not required.
Because you will be dropping stitches you need to choose a yarn that will ladder easily. You don’t want a yarn that is ‘sticky’ where the stitches will resist laddering. Avoid hairy yarns such as mohair or alpaca.

Dimensions after blocking: 2.6m long (102 inches) and about 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) wide. Mine weighs only 60 grams.

Gauge: My gauge with a heavy laceweight and 3.75mm (US 5) needles was 36 stitches in 5 cm (2 inches). Gauge is not super important, although it will affect size and yarn usage. Choose a needle size that gives a fabric that isn’t too dense, so that you get a beautiful open drapey finished scarf. The scarf is knitted flat in rows and you can use circulars or straight needles.

You can make it shorter or longer (if you really want to!) or wider than mine, although a wider and/or longer scarf will need more yarn. Tips are given for resizing the scarf with heavier yarn and bigger needles.
