Collegiate Cap
Lately I’ve found myself reminiscing on my college days….walking everywhere I needed to go….hanging out with friends every day….being surrounded by books. The Collegiate Cap is a nod to life at university, with its simple stripes (they can be knit in your school colors!) and little details that really set it apart. It’s a very versatile design that can be worn with pretty much anything, especially since the pattern includes three different brim options and two different fit styles! I would recommend this project to anyone from advanced beginners on up! Basically, if you know how to knit in the round and perform simple decreases, you can make this pattern. :)
I designed this piece in Hobbii Evergreen, a new fingering weight organic wool yarn that I’ve fallen deeply in love with and highly recommend. It’s soft, lightweight, and bouncy and has beautiful stitch definition! You can find all 35 colors at Hobbii’s online yarn shop. One cool thing about this pattern is that you will need less than 40g total to make the double brim classic style, and slightly more than that for the slouchy version.
MATERIALS
-
For the fitted style, you will need approximately 156 yd (142 m) of fingering weight (1) yarn in main color and 40 yd (37 m) of fingering weight yarn in contrast color
-
For the slouchy style, you will need approximately 167 yds (152 m) of fingering weight (1) yarn in main color and 46 yds (41 m) of fingering weight yarn in contrast color
-
US 3 (3.25mm) 16” circular knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
-
US 3 (3.25mm) DPNs
-
Common notions, such as stitch markers, measuring tape, yarn needle, and scissors
MEASUREMENTS
All versions should fit most adults. For the fitted version, it measures approximately 7.5” tall and 21” around. For the slouchy version, it measures approximately 9.5” tall and 21” around.
GAUGE
28 sts x 39 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch. For this project, gauge is very important. If it”s off, your hat could end up unwearably large or small!
