Color by Number - custom
Worked at any gauge, in any weight yarn, the possibilities are truly endless for these colorful, modular patterns - make a headband, a cowl, mitts, or a blanket, in as many colors as you like, using a given color chart design, or you can make your own color pattern, using the included blank charts!
The whole Color by Number set is also part of the Coloring Book ebook, which is a collection of knit accessory patterns all designed to make the most of your colors!
This pattern listing is for custom versions of the design, using the full pattern; each official sample item has its own listing, and is available as a separate pattern. You can make items that look like the samples, or all kinds of other Color by Number items with totally different kinds of color patterns and shapes, using the customizable Color by Number pattern. There are design ideas given, which you can color in and use for the custom versions.
Color by Number uses no complex techniques like stranded knitting or intarsia, just plain striping, easy picked up stitches, and a couple yarn-carrying tricks to make for as little finishing as possible, while keeping a neat back side.
The simple rectangular shape of this pattern is made interesting by your use of colors - use as many as you want, and stripe them within each section in different ways for different effects. Use as few as two colors with interesting results, and up to as many as you want to throw in the mix - think leftover-stash-busting!
Included in the Color by Number full pattern is the customizable pattern, everything you need to know, plus all details for every sample item!
The full pattern is 22 pages long, with photo tutorials and lots of charts, but there is also a condensed pattern pdf, with 8 photo-less pages. The condensed version includes all of the full pattern text except for the individual sample item details, plus 10 blank charts that you can color in, but no photos or colored charts, to make printing easy.
Color patterns
You can work a color pattern exactly as charted within the pattern, alter one of the charts, or color in your own from scratch to make a totally custom item!
In addition to the charts for each of the seven sample items, the pattern includes 21 more color charts, plus another 21 blank charts that you can color in yourself to try out your own color ideas!
You need
2 or more different colored yarns, in the same, or almost the same, weights (yardage varies depending on size; exact sample yardages are given in the pattern)
Headband yardage (worsted-fingering recommended, unless you want an extra wide and squishy version like the sample bulky lightning headband)
-- worsted: 80-100 yards / 70-90 meters
-- sport: 90-120 yards / 80-110 meters
-- fingering: 100-150 yards / 90-140 meters
Cowl yardage (bulky-sport recommended)
-- bulky: 150-250 yards / 140-230 meters
-- worsted: 220-340 yards / 200-310 meters
-- sport: 300-500 yards / 270-460 meters
Mitts yardage (worsted-fingering recommended)
-- worsted: 80-140 yards / 70-130 meters
-- sport: 110-180 yards / 100-160 meters
-- fingering: 130-220 yards / 120-200 meters
Blanket yardage (any weight) totally depends on blanket size - it could be any size; it’s meant for you to use up stash and make it as large as you want, or to keep going until you run out of yarn scraps.
needles sized to match yarn
buttons, 4-6 per item (size depends on gauge)
