3. Hold 3 strands together to achieve this color fade look. Three (3) strands of yarn are held together throughout, so you’ll want to wind your yarn into 3 balls of each color.

Blocked, this scarf/shawl is 88” long and 13 “ wide. I wanted a very luxurious scarf that could double as a shawl. A smaller version would be a lovely scarf. Simply reduce the number of stitches across and/or the length of each color section. The numbers for this are given in parentheses.

Yarn: Lace weight yarn in 3 colors (can be solids or variegated) 650 yds each. (400 yds each) Colors should not be too far from each other on the color wheel. So use blues and purples, or reds and purples, but reds and blues are probably not the best together. Also, use colors that are close in value – pastels or medium tones or darks, but don’t mix it up too much – not a fade from dark to pastel. You can use all variegated yarns as well.

Needles: #8

The scarf gradually changes color by substituting one strand of a new color at a time. I used Cascade Alpaca Lace in green, variegated and a navy.
