A simple but satisfying introduction to colorwork, this unisex hat can be worked in a variety of ways and in any gauge to achieve exciting effects.

The hat begins with the main color in a simple 1x1 rib and includes an increase round before proceeding into the colorblock design. The two colors of the design are alternated until the desired length, ending with the contrast color, then the main color alone is used to complete the crown decreases.

This pattern is intended for a light worsted or DK-weight yarn but could be adapted to lighter or heavier weight yarns by increasing or decreasing, respectively, the number of cast-on stitches by multiples of 4. The finished hat is meant to fit rather snugly, so if your colorwork gauge is tight or you need to accommodate larger than a 20” head circumference, consider casting on more stitches and investing in more of the main color.

For a more colorful hat, work the main color in a self-striping yarn and alternate it with either a solid or self-striping yarn. You may also change the combination of two colors at any point, starting with either Round 1 or Round 4. The possibilities are endless!
