The Colorito Scarf is knit in the round to create a warm, double-thick scarf. On every odd row, the middle of the three knitted stitches is an elongated stitch (the yarn is wrapped twice around the needle for the stitch, abbreviated “K1W2.”) On the even row, both wraps are dropped. This keeps the edges from being too tight. On every even row, these three stitches are slipped on each side. This encourages the scarf to fold and lie flat.

Bands of color with traveling 1-over-1 right-cross cable stitches (abbreviated “1/1 RC”) add texture and interest while you are knitting, and help you keep track of how many rows you have knit. The 1/1 RC stitch can be done using a cable needle or without one. Both ways are described in the pattern.

Yarn: 3 skeins Berroco Ultra Alpaca (50% super fine alpaca; 50% Peruvian wool); 3.5 oz (100g)/ 219yds (200m) or other comparable, worsted-weight yarn. You will need 2 skeins of Color A and 1 skein of Color B.

NOTES

  • The sample used all but 1/4 oz (8 g), or approximately 16 yds (14.6 m), of Color A, and .81 oz (23 g) of Color B. Use Color B for your gauge swatch, and purchase an extra skein of Color A if your gauge does not match pattern gauge.
  • Carry the yarn loosely up along the inside of the scarf when changing colors.
  • Each section of Waffle Rib should take approximately 1/2 oz (16 g) of yarn, and each Garter Ridge should take about 2 yards (2 m, or 2g) of yarn.
  • The 1/1 RC stitch pattern is written out and charted.
