This tile is crocheted in mosaic overlay technique, in the round. This implies that there are no numerous ends to fasten off, just two for each color used. The technique is not difficult, as long as you pay close attention to the stitch placement in the chart.

Columbine is made in 20 rounds, starting with a magic circle. Stitches used are (all in US terms): slip stitch, chain stitch, half double crochet, single crochet in back loop only, double crochet in front loop only.

The basic pattern is made in two colors, but it is easy to create different looks by adding your own colors. Contrasting colors give the best results. Each tile that is made with DK weight yarn (115-130 m per 50 g skein) will measure about 24-26 cm and weigh about 40-44 g.

This tile is one of my favorites I designed so far. It looks great when you crochet several of them and put them together in a blanket or pillow. The effect of the tiles that are interacting with each other is mesmerizing.

The pattern includes a chart, written instructions and photos to illustrate certain stitches or techniques.

I created a separate file, ‘Mosaic Tile – Crocheting the First Four Rounds’, a tutorial with plenty of photos on how to start a mosaic tile. It is intended for those who are not familiar with mosaic crochet and need more information than the pattern provides.

The adventurous may want to crochet this tile with two colors in the foreground, applying tapestry technique to carry the unused color along. The photo of the maroon flower with the cream background is an example. In the center of this tile, maroon was combined with pink, further out maroon was combined with green. The pattern contains detailed instructions for this tapestry technique.
