Columns Infinity Scarf/Cowl
This was a very easy, very warm, very last-minute gift for my mother. I think the end result was quite stylish, and it was a lot of fun to make! It’s got a sturdy, almost architectural quality that makes it feel like a very important thing to wear, and also makes it quite warm. Plus, such a fast way to use up tons of yarn leftovers. Since the scarf is a tube, you don’t even have to hide the ends when you change colors! You can make any size or gauge scarf you’d like: with a pattern repeat of 2 sts, it’s easy to alter. The information below is for the “example size” shown here- see the “customize” section of the pattern to knit it in any size/any gauge.
Yarn:
Main Color (MC): Shown in Brown Sheep Co. Lamb’s Pride Worsted “Plum Smoke”(190 yds/174m, 113 g/3.99 oz.), a solid-colored aran weight yarn. One skein is enough to make a scarf 40in/101.5cm around and 6.5in/16.5cm wide. I used a small bit of a second skein to get a scarf that was 44in/112cm around. I later “renovated” it to a length of 55in/140cm and still didn’t use up all of the second skein. A cowl of the same width would use about ¾ of a skein.
Contrasting Color (CC): A ton of yarn leftovers in various weights. For a scarf at a gauge of 4.5 sts/in( 18 sts/4in/18 sts/10cm), use bulky and worsted yarns as-is, and use 2-4 strands of sport weight or sock yarn at a time. You can also twist strands of roving and knit that in too. I had a gallon- sized plastic bag of yarn scraps and I used most, but not all of it. Not enough yarn scraps? You could also select skeins of a few colors and do stripes, or use one contrasting color throughout.
Gauge: Shown in a gauge of 4.5 sts/in, 18 sts/4in/18 sts/10cm in pattern.
Needles: Shown using US 7/4.5mm 16 inch circular needle. You’ll need a second circular needle in a similar size for joining the beginning of the scarf to the end.
Size: Size shown is 6.5in/16.5cm wide and 44 in/112cm around.
Skills: Provisional cast-on and grafting/kitchener stitch, (or cast on and 2-needle bind off), knit stitch, knit in the round, 2 color knitting.
Accessibility Notes: 12 point serif font with bolded and underlined headings, no columns (except for abbreviation key).
