Compo Hat 2 (aka Cable and Trinity Stitch Hat)
I first started watching Last of the Summer Wine around 2005, and I of course wanted to knit Compo’s sage green cabled hat. I looked online and could only find other people looking for the hat or bad patterns, so I snapped and made my own pattern. Compo wore a few other hats throughout the series, though (including a dark green ribbed hat and a crocheted sage green hat), so I decided to knit this cable and trinity stitch hat as well. I suspect this is not an accurate pattern as the screenshots I based it on were not especially good quality, but no matter, I got something close enough.
I based this pattern off a few screen shots of the episode “Ferret Come Home.” I did my best to mimic the hat onscreen, but I could not tell exactly what kind of cable was on the hat or exactly how the decreases were spaced. The cable was apparently a small wheat ear cable, but each cable looked narrower than a standard 2x2 cable and appeared to have only one stitch traveling over the front part of the cable, so I decided on a claw cable. For the decreases, I decided on a centered double decrease centered over rest the pattern chiefly because it worked mathematically. There is also a centered single decrease in the first round of decreases, though you may simply knit two together instead if you wish.
This hat is alternating panels of claw cable (basically a mini wheat ear cable) and trinity stitch with ribbing in between. I highly recommend experience with both cables and trinity stitch or some other form of increasing in the same stitch (e.g. bobbles) before beginning this hat.
If I ever get a better look at the pattern and come up with something I like better, I’ll upload it right away. :)
