When I designed the Conavalla Wrap, I wanted a visually interesting piece that could be made in multiple widths, so I combined a textured pattern with a simple eyelet lace. The alternating diagonals of the pattern remind me of hills and valleys.
Conavalla is a peak in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. The Irish name, Ceann an Bhealaigh, means “head of the pass.” Both sides of my father’s family emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the 19th century. I chose the name Conavalla in honor of them.
The pattern was first published in Knit Now Magazine, issue 112, (www.knitnowmag.co.uk) in February 2020. That was the off-white version, which is in Aran/Chunky weight yarn. When it came time for me to re-release it, I decided to make a second version, the blue one, in DK weight yarn. I have included yarn requirements and finished measurements for both yarn weights.
Depending on the yarn you choose and the number of pattern repeats across, Conavalla will give you anything from a wide scarf to a one-person throw big enough to wrap yourself in on a cold winter day. I hope you enjoy knitting it as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.
The wrap is knit flat.
Skills needed: knit, purl, slipped stitches, yarn over, knit 2 together, long-tail cast-on.
