Conduit Cowl/Wrap.
Conduit Cowl/Wrap is at least three cowl (or wrap) styles in one calm project, and makes a good canvas for a collection of DK-weight yarn scraps and cool buttons.
This project is an easy technical knit; the look is determined by your yarn choices, and the versatility is in the finishing.
Designed as a slow, mid- to longterm project, Conduit Cowl is intended to use up odds and ends of DK/sportweight yarn over days or a week or two of knitting.
Since colors change whenever necessary or desired, it’s a good canvas for a daily-temperature color project or a scrapbook of yarns left over from previous projects. And of course you always could flaunt convention and go for a tasteful neutral in a single matching colorway instead.
It doesn’t skimp on yardage or depth, and the end result is a cozy cowl that can be worn as a long tube cowl (with enough depth for hood-style wear, too), a double-knit reversible tube cowl, or a short loop cowl. These are pretty intuitive, but if you’d like ideas, an extra style .PDF—included—shows these different looks specifically.
This project requires twelve 3/4/2cm buttons. I’d recommend using embroidery thread, sewing thread, or some sort of smaller thread (I used waxed linen) to open up your button options beyond the yarn-friendly ones, but this is optional, of course.
Materials:
- 330-350g or 811-861yds of assorted DK/sportweight yarns/scraps; the cowl shown includes Malabrigo Yarns Arroyo, Knitpicks Merino Style, and Knitpicks Swish DK.
- 1 16”+ circular needle in US6/4.0mm, or size needed for gauge.
- 1-2 removable stitch markers or scrap yarn
- Tapestry needle.
- 12 buttons, 3/4”/2cm
- Optional: smaller needle, embroidery or sewing thread for buttons
Gauge:
For the cowl shown, gauge is 20 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10cm in stockinette stitch, worked in the round and lightly blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.
Techniques:
For this project, you’ll need to be comfortable working in the round.
