This square’s texture comes from popcorn and picot stitches. Even if you’ve never tried these stitches before, I hope that from my photos and explanations you can learn how!

I used worsted weight yarn and a J (6.0mm hook) to make a square about 7.25 inches, but you can use any weight yarn and its appropriate hook. I think the possibilities for colors are practically endless!
