Don’t we all need something that’s not too complicated but pretty, lacy, and just a little bit witchy to knit in the fall?

This cowl is inspired by the main character and witch-- Connie Goodwin-- from the books The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs by Katherine Howe.

I’ve created this cowl to be simple but elegant. The lace design is fairly straightforward but includes a some moss stitch texture which makes it a more interesting knit. The beads add a bit of fun and contrast, although they are entirely optional.

I suggest keeping the gauge for this project somewhat small, although you can increase the gauge size slightly if you want. But with a slightly smaller gauge and gentle blocking the texture of the moss stitch stands out more than any yarn overs. I also suggest a yarn that has a lot of bloom to it, not one that is super tightly spun.

Because Constance requires only a small amount of lace weight yarn-- only 0.9oz-- this works perfectly for using up small amounts of stash yarn.

Materials

  • 0.9oz lace weight yarn

  • Size US5 18” circular knitting needle, or size needed to obtain gauge

  • 36 size 6/0 seed beads (optional but highly recommended)

  • Steel crochet hook small enough to fit through bead (optional) suggested: 1.0mm
