Containing Multitudes
Introduction: A long term knitting project holds the many variances of the knitter herself through a stretch of time. Knitting is a meditative process and designing a pattern is all-consuming, but still in looking at this finished product, I can remember the events that surrounded each section of the pattern. The roughly 74,000 stitches of this shawl saw me through the illness of a pet, a road trip with my mother, the dwindling of summer, and the beginning of a new school year. Its stitches contain anxiety and tension as well as contentment and joy, the full expression of the human condition. If you knit this shawl, I hope that the meditative stretches of garter stitch bring you time for reflection; I hope the lace work panels engage and focus your mind; I hope that the emerging mosaic diamonds spark wonder for you; and I hope that the star mesh inspires you with renewed hope. I hope that your project from this pattern contains the multitudes of you.
About this pattern: This large asymmetrical shawl reverberates with alternating garter stitch stripes, leafy lace sections, high-contrast mosaic diamonds, and scintillating star stitch mesh. The large size envelops the wearer in an abundance of hand knit fabric, resulting in an accessory that can be artfully draped around the neck or warmly snugged around shoulders. The small size invites the knitter to run wild through her stash in search of coordinating skeins of sock yarn to create a very wearable sized shawl.
Materials:
Yarn: 300 (400) grams of fingering weight yarn in 3 colors.
I recommend a solid, a variegated, and a speckled that coordinate. The shawl also works well in 2 high-contrast colors.
Large sample uses
MC: 150g of Malabrigo Sock in Violeta Africana
CC1: 100g of Malabrigo Sock in Archangel
CC2: 100g of ZenYarnGarden Serenity20 in Flushed Splatter.
Small sample uses
MC: 100g of Anzula Nebula in Sexy
CC1: 100g of Cascade Heritage Sock in 9681 (cream)
Needles: US 6 (4.0mm), or needles to match gauge or to achieve desired fabric.
Notions: Tapestry needle
Gauge: As an accessory, gauge is not essential for this shawl, but changes in gauge will affect project size and yarn usage.
I recommend using a fairly loose gauge (larger needles) for the weight of your yarn to achieve a light and slinky fabric.
24 sts / 32 rows = 4 inches square in garter st.
