This is a great cabled hat pattern. It looks difficult but is so easy. It is an excellent beginner cable project. Instructions are written for working flat or in the round. I used cashmere because I was feeling indulgent (and boy is it warm) - but a nice merino wool like Zara or Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran works equally well for a fraction of the price!
