This shawl is worked in one piece from the neck down. The size can be altered by doing additional (or fewer) repeats of chart 2. The edging chart can also be repeated for a larger border, or skipped entirely if yarn is limited, for a smaller shawlette. 400 to 600 meters of yarn are required, depending on the size. Any light fingering weight or laceweight yarn may be substituted.

Acer Palmatum “Sango Kaku“ is commonly known as coral bark maple. The bark turns a bright coral red late in the season and remains red throughout the winter. It is a lovely contrast to the snow, bringing some much-needed colour to the garden in the cold months. The red colour fades as the stem grows larger. We had 2 specimen in our garden for years, but, sadly, they did not survive one particularly brutal winter. Other red-stemmed varieties have been developed over the years, and a newer one, called “Beni Kawa“ has been introduced into our garden.
