The Corday cowl is all about cosy texture – chunky yarn, half brioche stitch, and cables make for one of the snuggliest accessories around.

Using just two skeins of chunky weight yarn, this bandana cowl knits up satisfyingly quickly. The pointed front shape tucks nicely into winter coats, without any of the bulk of scarves and shawls.

And with a central panel featuring half brioche stitch cables, surrounded by an edging of pearl brioche, the Corday cowl also lends itself well to colourblocking.

The instructions for the Corday cowl are both written and charted, with links to video tutorials for the garter tab cast-on and half brioche stitch.

Key information
Begins with a garter tab cast-on, and the first section is then worked like a triangular shawl back and forwards in row. Once the half brioche cables have been completed, the cowl is joined in the round and four rows of garter stitch are worked to mark the transition point between textures – and to finish off the garter stitch border.

If you want to work a colourblocked cowl, then the pearl brioche border can be worked in a second colour. This section is worked in the round, and the cowl is finished off with a final garter border.

Recommended yarn, and yarn requirements: the sample is worked with The Fibre Co. Tundra (60% baby alpaca, 30% Merino wool, 10% silk, 109m per 100g) in Boreal. To work the cowl you’ll need around 160m (175yds) of a similar chunky weight yarn.

If you want to work a colourblocked sample, then you’ll need one skein (or around 80m/88yds) of each colour.

Gauge: 12st by 20 rows measured over the half brioche cable pattern.

Although gauge isn’t critical as the cowl doesn’t need to fit in the same way as a garment does, if your gauge is very different from that listed then you’ll find you use more or less yarn than stated here.
