Corn Dollies
Gauge is unimportant for this project, you just need to make sure that your stitches are tight enough that the stuffing in the head doesn’t come through.
The finished size is approximately 5 1/4 inches.
The traditions of the corn dollies vary. They were not always made to resemble a woman. Sometimes, they were simply artfully crafted items made from the harvest at Lughnasadh, the start of autumn, and kept inside throughout the winter to protect the spirit of the grain. They would then be plowed into the field at the spring planting. Other times, they would be made as the Harvest Mother, or as the Spring Bride. They are sometimes made as symbols of Brigid and placed on a bed of white flowers at Imbolc, and carried from house to house where they would be given gifts.
These little dolls can be made in a variety of ways; for your fall or spring alter, to be added to seasonal wreaths, or even just as little dolls for children to play with! They are easy to customize with different colors and decorations. Have fun with them!
