Coronal
Coronal is a stranded colorwork hat with a seamless folded brim. The design is reminiscent of diamonds on a crown, or ice crystals frozen on a windowpane. A unisex design that comes in a number of sizes, the Coronal hat is perfect for three seasons (spring, fall, and winter) of wear.
Materials Required:
Yarn:
Main color:1 skein of Briggs & Little Sport (100% Wool; 430 yds 393 m / 113g; 1 ply). Or 300 yds 278 m of equivalent light sport weight or heavy fingering weight yarn.
Contrast color: 1 skein of Briggs & Little Sport (100% Wool; 430 yds 393 m / 113g; 1 ply).
Shown in (MC) Medium Grey and (CC) Natural White. Or 150 yds 137 m of equivalent light sport weight or heavy fingering weight yarn.
Needles:
One 40 cm / 16” circular in size 2.75 mm / US 2 or size needed to obtain gauge.
Five double pointed needles in size 2.75 mm / US 2 or size needed to obtain gauge.
Other materials:
Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scrap yarn for provisional cast-on, row counter or pen and paper
for note taking, pom pom maker (optional), towels for blocking.
Gauge:
36 stitches and 44 rows = 10 cm / 4” in stranded colorwork pattern on 2.75 mm / US 2 needles.
35 stitches and 53 rows = 10 cm / 4” in 2x2 ribbing pattern on 2.75 mm / US 2 needles.
Sizes:
Finished size: 39 (46, 46, 53) cm / (15.5 (18, 18, 21)” in main body of hat, unstretched; 19.5 (19.5, 22.25, 23) cm / 7.75 (7.75, 8.5, 8.75)” from base of brim to top of crown.
To fit with a negative ease of 0-5 cm/ 0-2”.
Techniques:
Crochet provisional cast-on, chart reading, knitting in the round, stranded knitting or fair isle knitting, increasing, decreasing and finishing.
