My Cortez hand warmers were inspired by American Horror Story : Hotel and my love of Art Deco and the 1930s/1940s era!

I loved the idea of a shapely, feminine hand warmer that would sit elegantly on the wrist without being bulky or cumbersome and the yarn used lends itself to this pattern extremely well as it’s available in a wide range of colours and gives excellent stitch definition.

Plus, this is a great stash buster as the pattern uses just under 30g of yarn (if using the suggested yarn)!!

This pattern is knit in the round until the side thumb opening, with this section knit flat (ie back and forth) for the length of the thumb opening, then rejoined to knit in the round until the end.

I knit these handwarmers using a 9”/23cm circular needle and knit the flat section using a second 9”/23cm circular needle - I found the flexible cable on a short circular needle easier to use than a fixed needle for the flat section.

This is a ‘one size fits all’ pattern and was written to fit an average woman’s hand but can easily be adapted by using a smaller or larger needle size and/or a lighter or heavier weight yarn.
