These mittens were inspired by the southern Swedish (Skåne and Blekinge specifically) “julträd” that were in fashion in the early 20th century. They were handmade wooden candelabras that were used before Christmas trees as we know them today became the standard.

They are knit with worsted or DK weight yarn (you want a yarn that is about 100 m per 50 g, and this can fall into both the worsted or DK category. There are even aran yarns that could work) and will fit approximately teen L, womens M, or mens S (20 cm circumference). If knit as described, the mittens will be fairly dense which makes them great for Scandinavian winters, If you prefer a more flexible fabric and a looser fit, you can go up to size 3.25 mm or 3.5 mm needles. If you go further than that, you risk losing pattern definition.

You need two colors of yarn and approximately 50 g or 100 m of each.

They have been designed for and tested (by me) with Svarta Fåret Soft Lama

They are started off with a folded picot hem, and the steps are described in writing. If you’re new to the technique and would like some visual help, I can recommend this YouTube video:
