You can use this pattern two ways:

  1. to make a swatch for the Quick Sweater
  2. just for making a cowl with the same stitch (a sizing table is included with stitch counts for both small and large single loops; fingering - aran weight yarns).

If you are making your cowl as a sweater swatch, be sure to allow at least 100m/110yd of extra yarn for the cowl, so you don’t had to undo it.
If you do run out of yarn for the sweater, it’ll be nice to know you have a “reserve” .

For a cowl that folds over allow about 200m/220 yds of yarn in the weight of your choice (fingering - aran)

When we’re going to make a sweater, we all know we’re supposed to swatch….

Some of us NEVER swatch

…. and we wonder why our sweaters never fit or we’re always running out of yarn.

Some of us make a quick swatch and measure roughly

….. and we wonder why our sweaters don’t quite fit.

Some of us even make a proper swatch, wash it and then measure it

… and even then we can get nasty surprises because a 4”/10cm - or even - 6”/15dm swatch may not be enough to let us see how our yarn will react to wash and wear.

But we can solve that with a cowl we can count on:

Make the cowl
Wear it
Wash it
THEN - AND ONLY THEN
- count your stitches and rows to check your gauge.
