Any worsted weight yarn will work for this pattern, however, be mindful that not all WW yarn is created equal…some tend to be a little thinner and some a little thicker, which will affect gauge. Nor is each individual crocheter created equal, also potentially affecting gauge. If you find that when making your swatch you use fewer stitches/rows, you may need to go down a hook size; if you use more, go up a hook size.

To achieve the best fit, measure the person’s head for whom you are making this ear warmer and subtract an inch (to allow for stretching). Follow the pattern for the closest measurement, rounding down towards a smaller size if necessary. For calves, measure around the largest part of the calf and subtract 1.5-2”. Follow the pattern closest to that measurement (I err on the smaller side and prefer my boot cuffs to fit a little snugger, as they may move around a little when you walk if they are too big). I recommend measuring the calf while wearing the pants to be worn with the boot cuffs. Pants (especially thick pants like jeans or corduroys) will add significantly to the circumference of your calf.

Turning chain does not count as a stitch.

The Toddler and Child size will end on a RS row, with only 2 decrease rows. Larger sizes will end on a WS row and have 3 decrease rows.

Optional: I used a hook one size smaller to work the SC around the ear warmer. I feel like it helped to give a cleaner edge.

I recommend tacking around the end of the ear warmer with some left over yarn once you have sewn the button on so that it doesn’t stretch at the buttons when wearing it. It gives it a nicer, finished look.
