This cowl is worked flat in a simple four-row leaf lace with wrong side resting rows. Stitches are then picked up from the side edge of the leaf lace and joined in the round, where layers of brick wall build up using slipped stitches.
The companion hat, as written, will make a slouchy style hat. Suggestions are given for making a smaller size.

Finished Size:
cowl - 24” circumference at top edge, 11” high
hat - 20” circumference, 9” high

knit
purl
yarn over
k2tog, and
a variety of slipped stitches
