Cover for Sugar-Bowl and Cream-Pitcher
This can be a dainty little vintage bowl cover. Reproduced from the “Handbook of Crochet, No. 2”, Published by Needlecraft Publishing Company, c 1921. When choosing your beads make sure they are not so heavy that they crack your china bowls. This is a great piece to learn how to do basic filet crochet.
The original recommended thread for this bowl cover was a US Size 50 weight. The resulting bowl cover would have a very small mesh and be quite delicate in appearance. The pattern has been written based on a US Size 10 weight thread which makes the bowl cover large enough to cover a cereal bowl. The smaller your thread, the closer you will be to the original intent of the design.
This is a basic filet pattern rated as “beginner/easy”. It does assume that you have pre-knowledge of filet crochet.
Stitches used: sl st, sc, ch, dc
Beads are optional.
The bowl cover pictured is covering a small wash basin bowl and is 15.5 inches square using the size 10 thread.
The gauge and amount of thread required is for #10 weight thread. The gauge can change depending on your hook size, the weight of your thread, and your personal tension. As long as your number of blocks (width) = number or rows (height). You are square and good to go.
