This pattern includes the Original Covey knitting pattern, plus Covey Mini. Covey Mini is in the photos in the Antique Lace colorway by MadelineTosh. Covey Mini requires 1/3 the yardage of the Original Covey pictured in the red colorway. Covey Mini is the cowl-only version.)

I believe you would be hard pressed to find a more luxurious or cozy cowl than Covey. The original, knit in the most glorious red colorway I have ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on and in a DK yarn with a beautiful sheen and soft squishiness that was nothing short of a complete pleasure to knit on slightly oversized (for the yarn weight needles) is on the top of my list of personal all time favorites to have knit.

I designed and knitted this piece for my daughter, according to some very specific requests on her part. She wanted a cowl that could be worn three ways: 1) as a non-twisted cowl around the neck, 2) pulled up over the head as a hood while still maintaining plenty of cowl around the neck (sometimes known as a “snood”, and 3) as either a cowl or snood and also pulled down slightly over the shoulders.

She also wanted a non-lacey, simple texture and wanted the colorway to deep be a deep, rich red.

To accommodate all of these requests the knitted piece needed to be wide enough to stretch over the shoulders, and long enough to bunch up around the neck as a cowl while also being worn over the head as a hood.

My quest began in search of the most perfect red colorway I could find that suited her taste, which is always exquisite. After trying several colorways that seemed close, I finally found “Tart” by Madeline Tosh…love at first sight. This red colorway has deep undertones and an ever so slightly variegated appearance for visual interest. It is nothing short of stunning.
